Sandoval is located at the junction of US Highways 50 and 51. At the time the US Highways were numbered, this was the meeting point of the central north/south route with the central east/west route, an equal number of highways being numbered to the north, south, east and west.
US Highway 50 is an extension of the Mason-Dixon line that divided the North from “Dixie. Sandoval, Illinois, in Marion county, is 63 miles E of St. Louis, Missouri. There are 1,434 residents in the village.

Sandoval Community Unit 501 is a rural school district located in western Marion County, Illinois. The district is made-up of two communities, Sandoval and Junction City. The community of Sandoval (obtain map) is comprised of some small businesses and is also a farming community. Junction City, located 2 miles south of Sandoval, is a residential area with few businesses. Sandoval and Junction City have populations of 1,500 and 500 respectively. The district has a combined enrollment of around 597 students.

The Territory of Illinois was separated from that of Indiana in 1809. The newly appointed governor for this territory was Ninian Edwards, and the seat of government established at Kaskaskia. By an act of Congress in April 1818, Illinois was admitted to the Union as the twenty-second state with Shadrach Bond the first governor.Marion County was organized on January 24, 1823, and named for General Francis Marion, a hero of the Revolutionary War.Odin Township originally had the villages of Odin and Sandoval within its boundaries, however, in 1896 it was divided into Odin and Sandoval, Illinois townships.

Sandoval was the population center of the United States for a considerable portion of the 20th Century. Sandoval’s central location in the United States was recognized early on. The town was originally platted as a replacement for Washington, D.C., with space reserved for the White House and other branches of government.
